Our place to communicate

This is an opportunity to tell our stories! I am learning this at school and have high hopes for it as a family project. Please forgive the initial problems with the old blog.
Love,
Nancy

Hi All, I got an email from Arleen Koello who got my name off the Pecan registry at Ancestry.com. She is related by marriage to James Pecan's sister, Sarah Jane Pecan. She says she has a lot of info on the Pecan tree and if we want to check it out, she has a public tree on Ancestry named "Conklin Family Tree" She also asked if I had gotten in touch w/ Larry Buettner - now refresh my memory - wasn't he the one that tracked Grandpa back to a Hispanic and we doubted the authenticity?

Tricia,
I was excited about being Spanish! And recently, Sarah had genetic testing done for the BRAC factor. She tested negative for it (hooray!) but they said that some research has shown women of Hispanic Jewish descent tended to carry the BRAC gene. Maybe there is not only Spanish heritage, but Jewish as well!?

Nancy, That is fantastic news about Sarah! Bring me up to date tho, did you have the genetic testing done first? I'm asking because when I looked into having it done here at the Huntsman Institute, they told me I had to have a sibling that has cancer tested before they would test me. That's when Jean agreed to do it and she was negative and therefore I couldn't be tested. Sorry about the spanish bloodline, however, Addy wants to go to Spain next year for a semester abroad and I told her she should talk to you!

Thank you, Aunt Marie, you gave me courage tonight to fight through my lack of familiarity with the internet communication model. I found my password, fumbled around until I got into Nancy's blog, and I want to participate in our family story.
Aunt Marie, I am not on Facebook and I have no idea what wall you now have to read (big grin)
Thanks for the story about Charles and the stage. I look forward to the time I can see him perform as well. Wow! I never imagined having an actor in the family!
Tricia, it has been a few years since I did the cancer gene testing. Perhaps criteria have changed??
Love to all! Jean

What a fun bunch of email messages and a good laugh over the technology gaps in all of us! I have to say, Blatz's don't back down from any challenge! Ron told me tonight Dad posted a "Can I add you as a friend" on Ron's site!! He got a kick out of that and I got a reminder to get with it!

PS - Go Obama!

Hey, good luck to our Nation in today's elections. I don't care who wins, they will have a HUGE and hugely important job and need all of our support.
I tried early voting, but they only had 2 polls set up and a L-O-N-G waiting line, so I'll take some vacation hours and go about 3:00 this afternoon. It will be an exciting time as the results come in! Bye!

I loved Aunt Marie's response to Facebook. I remember being so jealous of Kara last summer when she told me that Dad had asked her to be his friend on Facebook. Then I had to sign up to access a public policy website, and the next thing I knew I was "friends" with Addie, Ronnie, Sarah, Charles, Dad and Hilary. Then I saw that Aunt Marie had signed up, so I invited all the cousins to become her friend - which may be why she got bombarded.

Who would have thought that Dad would be on Facebook before all of us - and that he would be the first in the family to buy a hybrid car? I just hope I am as progressive as him when I am in my 80's!

Hi guys! I am still on Cloud 9 about Barack, and was so inspired to see all of the students and grass roots organizing he had going for him. (very cool that Matt and Catherine were up in NH...that state went for a Dem which was unusual for NH)...

I got the BRAC testing done because I have these darn fibroids again (and they are getting out of hand, again)...The doctors I talked to about my options suggested the BRAC test because of the strong family history of cancer, and I felt like I should get it done, so I could weigh what my options were, fibroid-wise. I tested negative, so that was good to know. But of course, that test doesn't say that I don't have a chance of getting cancer, I just know I don't have that genetic mutation. (It's kind of like the clotting problem I have. I happen to have the "unknown" factor, not the one they can test for. Lucky me.

SO anyway, knowing that I'm negative for the BRAC means I would probably not consider having my ovaries removed (to prevent ovarian cancer)...I think my next step with my fibroids will be another myomectomy, which means they will again try to preserve my uterus, and Tom and I will try to have a baby.

Just wanted to keep you all in the loop. I'll see you on Facebook (you should check it out, right Jane?)...if you become my friend, you can see my pictures of Argentina. Ron and Nate just became my friends the other day. I still can't find Addie, though.

Thanks to Tricia I just found out we have a Blatz Blog! This is the first time I have been on any blog! Facebook and a blog! But I don't have a hybrid car. But I did vote for Obama. I hope this feeling that we really have a chance to rebuild our relationahip with the rest of the world really bears fruit. The past eight years have been painful as our arrogance and isolationism grew.
Now I am in a quandary - do I blog or do I write on walls(!?)in facebook? I really like this because if feels easier for the technically challenged. And so far at least it seems newsier to me. That's until I meet a snag I don't know what to do with.
Love to all of you,
Aunt Marie

Wow Sarah, you have so much to sort through and you're still so young! Those decisions are huge and I'm glad you have Tom to share them with - he seems so level headed and I know he only wants whats best for you. Of course I'm rooting for trying for a baby but I inherited that gene from my Mom and I'm not ashamed of it!! I am also glad Obama beat out the old way which wasn't working but I know his learning curve will be steep. I hope he's not too proud to bring in the very best advisers he can and so far it looks like that's what he is doing. As Hilary said, it takes a village. I was amazed at the number of Utahns who voted for him as we are so red here candidates rarely visit. If you can get Mormons to go against what church leaders tell them to do, that tells you how desperately we need a change. I heard from Anne that Dad checked out the house in New Smryna and it's a mess - no wonder an oceanfront was so cheap. So we're back to the planning stages altho the week is set at July 11 - 18th.

Wow, this is great! Sarah, Marie, Jane, Jean and Tricia, thanks for your posts! I am hoping this will continue. Because I can't blog at work, I don't get to check often. Sarah, you and Tom will be wonderful parents, and I am thrilled to think about grandchildren!

Talked to Dad and Joan today and got the update on the reunion. Dad has contacted an agent that lists "family reunion sites" in the New Smyrna area and requested a brochure. He will check out what is available and hopefully we can score something on the beach for the Blatz Clan July 11 - 18th. It's rainy and cold here and the ski resorts have all opened ahead of schedule so Florida sounds really good now!

My name is Christine Weeks Durand and I lived next door to Joan on Collins Ave. Joan and my Mom Mickey, were good friends. I remember as a child taking trips with Joan and my Mom to Fire Island to her cousins summer house and we also went to Maine and Canada. My Mom went to Miami with them one year.
I have fond memories of Joan and her parents. As a young child, I would sit on the front steps with Mr. Hennessy and he would always let me knock on his wooden leg! Then, I would play with his crutches.
Joan had her hands full with my brother Bill too. I remember when he was in the high school band and one morning, he went to Joan's bedroom window and played "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" on his trumpet!!
I hope someone sees this message and lets Joan know I am thinking of her. Sincerely, Chris
